The page that follows is the prologue for Link’s Awakening, included in the Shogakukan guide. It reveals Link’s whereabouts and activities prior to his Koholint adventures. The guide also features a series of small questionnaires filled out by members of the development team.
The hero, Link, who had restored peace to Hyrule, wrested from the evil grip of the demon king, Ganon, had set forth on a journey to train himself in preparation for new calamities. His training in foreign lands complete, it was during his voyage for Hyrule that the ocean, which had until then been calm, grew suddenly rough and the ship which carried the boy was hit by a storm. A strike of lightning rent the vessel in two and Link sunk to the deepest depths of the ocean along with the wreckage.
“Ah! You’re awake.”
“…..Where am I…?”
Link regained consciousness to find he had been sleeping upon a bed. He had miraculously washed up on an island and been rescued by a girl named Marin while lying lifelessly on the sandy beach.
The island where Link had washed ashore was called Koholint. Upon this mysterious island a large egg rested on a mountaintop. It was said that a god called the Wind Fish slept within the egg. Link, heading to the beach in search of a missing sword, came upon a talking owl.
“If you want to leave the island, you must petition the Wind Fish. But first, you will need to wake him.”
According to the owl’s words, the Instruments of the Sirens would be necessary to wake the Wind Fish. However, these instruments were held, hidden, by 8 monsters who had made their nests on Koholint. Link headed for the caves where the monsters dwelt in search of the instruments. This is how, on an unfamiliar southern island, the adventure encompassing the Wind Fish began.
